Vesterbro is probably one of those areas in Copenhagen, which has changed most over the last 20 years. When I was a kid Vesterbro was definitely not an interesting place, and if I remember well it wasn't very safe either. Today Vesterbro still has its problems with drugs, crime and prostitution, but the area certainly also has several other much more positive and interesting things to offer.
Halmtorvet, which used to be the "center" for all prostitution, is now a hip square with great cafes, hip art museums and great restaurants. The same goes for Vesterbrogade and Istedgade, both streets become better and better the more you move away from the central station of Copenhagen.
Vesterbro has lots of small special shops, and the hip cafes and eateries are numerous.
Make sure you don't miss the little street called Værnedamsvej, which has a lot of charming shops and other places to offer.
