Every Tuesday morning Florentines and tourists head to the Cascine park near the Arno to visit the weekly market.
The market starts early in the morning and here you can buy all sorts of things from food such as vegetables, fruit, cheese and other agricultural products, over cheap clothes and household stuff, to birds, puppies and mouses!
The great thing about this market is, that it has the perfect size. Not too long and overwhelming, but big enough to keep you busy for quite some time.
Also, it is my impression that this market is a little more safe than other similar markets (such as Porta Portese in Rome). Of course you should always watch your bag and pockets when in crowded places, but I must say I never feel insecure here.
