Sydhavnstippen (or just “Tippen”) is an amazing nature area located very close to the center of Copenhagen. Not many people know about it, but this is really a place to visit if you are into wild nature, animals or maybe just looking for a nice and calm place to go for a run.
Originally Tippen was a waste disposal site (building waste was being "tipped" here - hence the name) and "Lorterenden" (Literally the shit channel) was where the sewers ran into the sea. Today you can see small houses and sheds along the channel and the whole area (and water!) is clean and maintained by lots of volunteers.
The area is famous for its bird and animal life. At Tippen you can in fact meet (and pet) lots of sheep, not to mention the alpaca lama! But there are also other more wild animals in the nature.
Tippen is also a fantastic place for a picnic. I have only visited the place in early spring where we brought our own lunch and sat in the grass, but I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to sit down by the water on a warm summer night with good food, good company and a nice sunset.
We need more places like this in our cities!
